TRAVEL CZARS

Introducing Melanie Ball

Australian Society of Travel Writers Awards:
Winner - Best Image Taken in Australia
Finalist - Best Image Taken Overseas

Melanie Ball's career as a travel writer and photographer fell off the back of an African overland truck as it rumbled from London to Johannesburg in 1986. Now a regular contributor to Australian magazines and metropolitan newspapers, she has ventured from England to Ethiopia, and from the Canning Stock Route to the Camino de Santiago, with an eye to all things colourful, edible, unusual, energetic and simply enjoyable. As eager to explore Australia's Outback as she is to join Guatemalan women making tortillas on a wood stove, Melanie prefers bushwalking to bungy jumping, hideaways to high-rise resorts, and any food - even chili-lime grasshoppers - to McDonald’s. Her appetite for different cuisines, history, wildlife encounters, dance, textiles and the world's many wonders and vagaries inspires her travels and colours her writing.

Melanie has been a member of the Australian Society of Travel Writers since 1995.
She has worked for Fodor's for five years, updating the Central Australia and South Australia chapters of their Australia guide book.
