Introducing Ewen Bell
Ewen is an independent traveller who takes a little more time to explore each destination than most. This has been the key to his photography, from which a career in travel writing has successfully followed. Published on a weekly basis around Australia and overseas Ewen has discovered the pen is mightier than the camera.
Travel is not just a leisure pursuit, it's a lifestyle choice. Having covered every continent across the globe Ewen has specialised in Asia during recent years. Everything from beach huts in Borneo to the luxury of Lebua. He loves Asia so much he even got married in Thailand, with chanting monks officiating a Buddhist ceremony on the beach.
China is also a favourite for Ewen, having travelled over a dozen times to search out unique treasures of this vast nation. From Kashgar in the west to Guizhou in the south he has travelled overland by train, camel, bike and boat to dig out stories of great beauty. The subtle nature of such a complex culture is a fascinating foundation for any travel journalist.
Writing and photography come together in Ewen's journalism package. Award winning images are accompanied by carefully crafted copy. The ability to adjust writing style to suit editorial needs is important to Ewen, who believes a freelance contributor should aim first and foremost to make easier the lives of their editors. Delivering on time, on length and on quality is essential.
Ewen is currently a regular contributor to Melbourne's Herald-Sun newspaper, Sydney's Sunday Telegraph, The Adelaide Advertiser and the following national magazines: Outdoor Australia, OutThere Inflight, Vacations & Travel, Holidays for Couples.

Denmark | Scandinavia | Destinations | Cycling |
This is life in the slow lane and loving it, the emphasis is on free wheeling, not racing. Women ride to and from work wearing long flowing dresses and sassy shoes, with room to put their laptop and handbag in the bicycle basket. Why hurry. With so many people employing the bike paths the emphasis is on comfort and style, instead of lycra and speed. Gentlemen enjoy watching the passing ladies, sipping a coffee or a Carlseberg depending on the time day.
Scandinavia | Finland | Culture | Indigenous Culture |
In the Finnish town of Inari, half way between the Atlantic Ocean and Helsinki, the reindeer are all over the place. They dodge traffic on the highways, wander the wilderness in search of mushrooms and are even found on pizza toppings at the local hotel. Inari is also home to several ethnic minorities of Sami people and their centuries of reindeer traditions.
Malaysia | Borneo | Island Escape | Diving | Snorkelling | Luxury |
As you wander along the drop-off the turtles drift past with effortless speed, stopping occasionally to graze on the coral. Floating above the reef flats even more turtles can be spotted below, asleep on the sea-bed. They can be hard to spot, camouflaged against the corals with their mottled shells and hidden from view by the endless distraction of brightly coloured fish. Swimming side by side with a 200kg sea turtle is a remarkable experience, and at Sipadan there are hundreds of them.
Kenya | Africa | Wildlife & Nature | Adventure | Outdoors |
The driver starts the engine, the headlights flick on and a dozen cats eyes are reflecting from behind the bushes. Not one but two prides of lions are sitting on the edge of the clearing. We came to see the wildlife, but hadn't expected the animals would come to see us.
China | Hong Kong | Culture | Destinations | Cities |
Where else but Hong Kong can you experience the joys of Mountain Jade, Golden Snow Monkey and Amber Dragon Silver Tip. They’re not tai-chi moves, they’re varieties of tea. Chinese culture and the English language have clashed for over a century to yield a city of six million tea drinkers and some colourful names for delicate flavours.
